Wonderful Wednesday Whatsits- 2nd April
The second school term may have been met with sagging spirits, but with the little surprise initiative collectively organized by the lead board heads, the student leaders of the school made sure that everyone started the day with cheer!
Groups of student leaders were stationed all around school on the first day of Term 2 to perform little actions to cheer the school up. Some handed out good luck notes for the upcoming TAs, some gave out candy and pick-up lines, some arranged themselves in a line of high fives, and others gave everyone in the area bro-fists, just to name a few.
The combined initiative was aimed at making the first day of school enjoyable for all, and judging by the smiles all around school, it was able to make everyone a little happier!
GM 4
The 4th GM, or General Meeting, was held on the 9th April, where the (S)PSLs gathered as a board to catch up on the events happening within PSB. We were updated on the Year 1 Personal Initiative, which aims to let the Year 1s organize a mini initiative to make any group of people in the school a little happier.
PSLs were also asked to fill in a secret quiz before the GM, which involved selecting options that best described ourselves- for example, our perception of our competitiveness, attractiveness and trustworthiness. Little did we know, that quiz was actually a personality quiz, which was used to group us into the different types of animals that were matched to our results! The groups we were split into included carnivores, reptiles, insectivores and rodents, herbivores and birds. The SPSLs then gave an introduction on the types of animals as a “Get-to-know-yourself” session, allowing the PSLs to analyse their strengths and weaknesses. Some groups even prepared gifts for the PSLs, with the herbivores receiving a paper leaf-clip, and the carnivores receiving a pink paper leash and pink hair ribbons.
Ultimately, this GM was a session where the PSLs could get to know their leadership style, strengths and weaknesses better in a group, while getting opportunities to work with people from different animal groups to learn about the different styles that people have.
VTC1
VTC, Voices That Care, kicked off on the 29th of April. The initiative aims to spread kindness and positivity around the school. VTC 1 2014’s theme is “Time to have a ‘lil fun!”. This was aimed at spreading happiness and letting the students have a chance to take a break from studying and relax to have a little fun.
Publicity posters were stuck all around the school, hinting at the events to come.
Tearable quotes were also pasted around school. Some had different types of smileys on them, while others were printed with jokes or pick up lines to cheer people up, or to make them smile or laugh. These small little slips of paper may not have been flashy, but they did manage to put a smile on the faces on the many RGS students who ran around school plucking the quotes off the posters!
The VTC OT also set up booths around school with fun activities to spread joy amongst the students. A polaroid booth was set up, along with a bubble blowing corner in the area next to the canteen, which was soon filled with shrieks of laughter and the pops of giant soap bubbles bursting. There was also a balloon sculpture booth, which let students experiment with balloons, and a limbo station in the canteen, with a string tied across the canteen that served as the limbo bar!
The start of VTC 1 filled the school with laughter and fun and we look forward to many such fun activities to come!
SKM
There were a number of activities organized by RGS SKM (Singapore Kindness Movement OT) in April!
One such initiative was Give-a-hug Day, which was held on the 29th of April. PSLs and SLTs were stationed all around school in their respective ClassICs with “free hugs” signs in the morning, giving out hugs to everyone who walked past. Each group of ClassICs were assigned to different areas of the school, and were assigned different hugs to carry out. The 101-104 ClassICs gave out normal hugs, the105-108 ClassICs gave bro hugs while the 109-113 ClassICs gave pound hugs. This initiative was then paired with the follow-up announcement, where the SKM OT explained the rationale behind the initiative, and asked everyone to give a hug to the people around them. It may be a small act, but it lifts everyone’s spirits and helped to start the day with a smile.
Another initiative kick-started in April was the “Jars of Kindness” initiative. Jars or bottles were given out to each class, with slips of paper in them. Every time someone receives a kind act, they are encouraged to fold a paper star with the paper slips provided, before popping it back into the jar. The more kind acts received, the fuller the jar becomes. It encourages people to do more kind acts and really encourages people as they see more and more positivity in the kind act stars accumulating!
